Buffalo Waterfront  (About a 25 minute drive from Niagara Falls)
Erie Basin Marina and the Buffalo Naval Park
One Naval Drive
Buffalo, NY 14202
(716) 847-1773

The Buffalo Waterfront is a great place to hang out for a few hours in the afternoon or evening.

For $5 (adult) you can tour the Buffalo Naval & Military Park.  For $5 you can go on a self-guided tour three US Navy ships:
  • The USS Little Rock, a Navy missle cruiser
  • The USS Sullivans, a Navy Destroyer
  • The USS Croaker, a Navy submarine

The naval park is only open April through November, so winter travelers may be out of luck.

Also on the Buffalo Waterfront -- Take a walk through Erie Basin Marina, a beautiful park along Lake Erie. There's an observation tower (free) that you can climb.  From the top, you'll see Canada, Lake Erie, and the Niagara River.

Grab a hamburger, roast beef sandwich or ice cream at The Hatch, a great little snack-food restaurant on Buffalo Harbor in Erie Basin Marina.  Oftentimes they'll have a live band playing in the evening.

If you have some money to burn and want some finer dining, make reservations to eat a Shanghi Reds seafood restaurant.  In the evening, Shanghai Reds will let you eat or drink in front of their brick bon fire pits outdoors, along the edge of the water.  It's pricey, but the atmosphere, service and food is superb.

Also from Erie Basin Marina, you could also catch a sightseeing cruise on the Miss Buffalo II or the Niagara Clipper.  Cruises will take you into Lake Erie or through the locks into the Upper Niagara River.  It's a fun way to learn about the history aof the area.

Martin's Fantasy Island Amusement Park
2400 Grand Island Blvd.
Grand Island, NY 14072
(716) 773-7591

If you're traveling with kids, you might want to consider Martin's Fantasy Island.  The park has a train ride, ferris wheel, petting zoo, antique car track, and antique carousel.  For bigger kids, there's a couple roller coasters, a log ride, bumper cars, a pirate ship, and a few wild spinning contraptions that make you puke.

The Wild West Show in Frontier Town is a blast.  You get to see cowboys have a shootout in the street!  Bring your bathing suit because there's a decent water park too.

It's not as flashy as some of the major amusement parks in the country, but it's definitely a fun place for a family of travelers looking for a place that's child-friendly.
